The group was formed em april of 1998, in the city of Porto Alegre (RS/Brazil). The first line up was made of three members of L'Oeuvre em Ruine, industrial rock band unmade still in 1998.

The name Club d'Essai is a reference to the concrete music research by the french composers Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, from 1948.

Already in its first months the group achieved local fame with impressive performances in cultural shows, eletroacoustic music festivals, street interventions and dramatic performances.

The opening performance for the german band Einstürzende Neubauten show, in october of 1999, signaled the end of the preparation period for the group's first project. In 2000, Club d'Essai continued its research for the development of other projects, allowing the group to keep the task of democratically taking dare and provocation to the most diverse audiences.
